Rita Ford Music Boxes was a celebrated New York City institution founded by Rita Ford around 1947, becoming one of the leading authorities on antique and modern music boxes and automata in the United States. Originally an antiques business, it soon focused exclusively on mechanical music, earning a reputation as a premier dealer, restorer, and curator of these intricate works.
Located at 19 East 65th Street in Manhattan, the shop attracted collectors, museums, celebrities, dignitaries, and royalty, including President Richard Nixon, Beverly Sills, Richard Rodgers, and royalty, for whom custom music boxes were created. Rita Ford was a founding member of The Music Box Society International and helped bring mechanical music to a wider audience through popular recordings such as A Music Box Christmas, which featured authentic 19th-century music box performances.
Following Rita Ford’s passing in 1993, the business continued as a family-run operation, with longtime associate Gerald Wright carrying forward her legacy of expert restoration, unique collections, and historical preservation. Today, Rita Ford Music Boxes is remembered as both a distinguished retailer and a lasting steward of mechanical music heritage.
